Have you ever watched a movie or a television show and seen a character walk by in a gown that you just know you've seen before? No, chances are you aren't just imagining it - there are literally hundreds of great examples of costumes that have been reused and recycled for use in other films. So if you've seen a recycled costume before that you don't see in our galleries, send it in!

One new costume and twenty-nine new sightings for all of you today. Enjoy and keep sending in submissions! As always, if I've overlooked a credit, please do let me know and I will rectify it.
May 4, 2012
Well everyone, try to contain your shock at this update! I have four new costumes and fifteen new sightings for you today!
I am in the process of trasnfering old comments from the past three years from Echo to Disqus. Several of our galleries, you may notice, are already up and running with Disqus. Not all galleries have been updated yet, but I am working on it and hope to have every gallery up and running with Disqus in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, ALL pages still have functioning comment systems, we're just currently running 50% Disqus and 50% Echo.
I will keep you all posted on the progress. In the meantime, if I've overlooked your sighting credit, please let me know, and keep sending in submissions.
April 27, 2012
Three new costumes and seven new sightings today! Enjoy them, everyone and keep sending in those submissions! Tune in next week for more updates!
Echo, the company I use on this site for comments has decided as of October 1st, they will discontinue their comment system.
Comments are still functional, and I am working this weekend to figure out how to move over to a new comment system that hopefully will allow most of our old comments to transfer over. I'm hoping to make everythin as seamless as possible, and hopefully none of you will even notice the change happening, but I did want to give you all a heads up in case you happen to come across a page that I am testing. I'll keep you all updated.
In the meantime, keep sending in submissions!
April 21, 2012
Well, I am back in town and back to our regularly scheduled updates! Sorry for such a long absence, but I was overseas.
Three new costumes and six new sightings for all of you today - please keep sending in submissions!
March 24, 2012
Five new costumes and fourteen new sightings for all of you today.
I am going out of the country for several weeks and am giving all of you this update to hopefully tide you over until I get back, as I will not have any access to a computer.
Look for fresh updates again around the 21st or 22nd of April.
While I am gone, please keep sending in submissions, but bear in mind I will not have access to e-mails, so I will not be able to respond to any of you until I am back. But send in submissions anyway - I hope to have an inbox full of them when I return!
I would hate for the fanbase for this website to go away while I am gone, so please do stick around. Also, tell someone about us! I'd love to have new followers and new contributors!
March 17, 2012
Four new costumes and eleven new sightings for all of you today. We also now officially have over five hundred different costumes documented on the site, so a big thank you to everyone who has ever contributed for making that possible! Also a big thanks to The Costumer's Guide for allowing me to spin off the idea from her wonderful site.
Shrewsbury Lasses let me know that some lovely costumes from various regency productions (with emphasis on Austen productions) are up for auction. Go here to check them out.
Also, there is a fantastic article up at Collectors Weekly here via Costumer's Guide, about costume designer Joseff, who outfitted many films with fantastic jewelry in the 30s and 40s. I was shocked to discover that in terms of jewelry, he seems to be the one to have come up with the idea of renting out the pieces again for other productions, which is, of course, very applicable to us here at Recycled Movie Costumes.
As always, keep sending in submissions. Please let me know if you see mistakes or I've left off your credit. Check back again next week for more updates! Here's to 500 more costumes!
March 9, 2012

February 4, 2012
Two new costumes and seven new sightings for all of you today, as well as some items of note:
Firstly, the second of three auctions of movie costumes belonging to Debbie Reynolds apparently took place in December. It was not as widely publicized as the first sale, so I accidentally overlooked it. However, some great stuff went up for sale, and you can learn about them and download a lovely catalog here.
I say this because there are lots of costumes listed...and because many of the costumes in the catalog were recycled for other productions, and in several cases, the catalog even mentions the production the gown was recycled for. Hint, hint.
Secondly, I know I've said it before, but I need to say it again to all of you- if you see a costume that you sent in to me, but do not see yourself credited, please, please shoot me a quick e-mail and let me know. The omissions are never intentional. I have many people who write in about the same costume before I have a chance to get it onto the site and want everyone to have credit for it - but at this point I have so many e-mails, photos and contributions, that even with everything organized, I still accidentally overlook people. So just know, it's not intentional, and just shoot me an e-mail and I will rectify it.
So enjoy your costumes for today - come back next week for more updates, and keep sending in submissions!

Alas, I will be out of town and away from my computer for the next two weekends. I'll have access to e-mail, so keep sending in submissions, but I will not be able to update the site. Check back for updates on the weekend of the 31st-1st.

July 9, 2011
Three new costumes and seven new sightings for you today.
I know I've had several people write in about the first costume, but can not for the life of me find anyone else listed - so if I've left your credit off, please let me know and I will rectify it.
We've officially been online for two years this week, which I can not believe. When I began this site, I honestly thought we'd find a few more recycled costumes, but that eventually we'd run out. Now we have over 100 people contributing, which is wonderful!
I keep meaning to post this - Sylwia wrote in a while ago about a video she made of recycled costumes. Check it out - it's great!
July 2, 2011
One new costume and six new sightings for you today. It's all I can do for today with the holidays here in the U.S. and a busy work week. Keep sending in submissions and for those of you in the U.S., have a wonderful 4th of July Holiday.
June 25, 2011
Three new costumes and six new sightings for you today. Enjoy everyone! The months of July and August suddenly, as of last week, started to fill up at work - so I may be working some weekends and updates may be sporadic. As always I will do my best, but if for some reason in the next few weeks I am unable to update that I will get to it as soon as I possibly can and have not forgotten you! Keep sending in submissions!
June 18, 2011
Two new dresses and six new sightings for you today. I've added an "other" category to the Sci-Fi Fantasy category, because I've got a few submissions in the backlog that I just don't know where to put, so all of the random stuff - foreign, or gowns that don't seem to know what era they belong in, etc will go there in addition to the sci-fi and fantasty items.
June 10, 2011
We had some down time due to technical difficulties this week for about 24 hours. Sorry about that, everyone! We are back up and running. One new costume and six new sightings for you today. I know a lot of you have written in with contributions - please be patient, I promise I will make it to everyone. I'm getting through them as quickly as I can. But please do not let my backlog of costumes keep you from sending in any new finds that you may come across! They bring me such delight!
June 3, 2011
Two new pages and five new sightings for all of you today! Enjoy! Also, just because I think it's really important in terms of recycled costumes and Hollywood costumes in general, Debbie Reynolds is apparently aucitioning off her extensive collection of Hollywood costumes. You can see images and download the catalog here.
I mention this mostly because a couple of the costumes are mentioned as having been recycled. In some cases this is noted, such as the costumes Lucille Ball wore in Dubarry was a Lady from Norma Shearer's Marie Antoiette. However, there are a couple other costumes noted to have been altered and used in unamed productions - namely a gown from Gaslight, starring Ingrid Bergman. If anyone happens to know what productions it could have been used in, please drop me a line. The catalog is full of fascinating information and imagery and I highly suggest downloading it!
May 14, 2011
Three new pages and seven new sightings for all of you today. Very likely no updates for the next two Saturdays, as I will be traveling. Keep sending in those submissions, however!

Colleen Atwood won the Oscar for best Costume Design last week for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. There is a great video about the nominees from this year, their history in the costume industry, as well as some interesting information on the history of the Best Costume Design award. Well worth the watch.

Two exciting new costumes and four new sightings for you today! Everyone enjoy! This next work week is shaping up to be a crazy one, so I don't know yet if I will be working next Saturday. I'll do my best to update next week, but depending on how things fall, it may or may not happen.
February 12, 2011
Did any Americans watch the Superbowl last Sunday? I did, and was shocked to find recycled costumes in one of the commercials. I think recycled costumes stalk me now that I can't even watch a sporting event without finding them! Anyway, I have one new costume and five new sightings for all of you today.
With regards to the headdress, I could have sworn more of you have written in to me about it...but I looked through all of my backlog of e-mails (no mean feat, let me assure you) and couldn't find anyone else. So, if somehow I have overlooked you, please, please e-mail me or leave me a comment and I will rectify it.
February 5, 2011

Three new gowns and seven new sightings for all of you today!

January 15, 2011
Two new costumes and five new sightings for you today!
Some items of note - apparently the Royal Shakespeare Company is selling off thousands of their costumes. You can read more about it here.
Also, the costumes of Downton Abbey (which is still running on Masterpiece Theatre on Sunday evenings in the U.S.) have drawn some interest. There is an article about the costumes from Downton having been used in other past productions - Recycled Movie Costumes even gets a mention. Check it out here!
January 8, 2011

Masterpiece Classic has started up again in the U.S. - tune in to Downton Abbey tomorrow night!
December 18, 2010
Three new pages and six new sightings for all of you today. New updates may not happen for two Saturdays since I'll be out of town - but if I can manage something, I will.
A trailer for Showtime's new series The Borgias is available to watch here. Considering the fact that such a huge bulk of our recycled costumes came from the Showtime Series The Tudors, I'd venture to guess we're going to have a lot of recycled costumes - and possibly even the same ones. So if any of you are planning to watch that, keep an eye out.
December 11, 2010
Three new costumes and seven new sightings for all of you today. Enjoy!
December 5, 2010
One new costume and four new sightings for you guys today. Gosh - when did December get here? Just when I thought I coud not be any more busy, the holiday season had to sneak up on me...
Also, Costume Chronicles has a new issue available to download for free. This issue focuses on the life and works of Jane Austen. Click the image below to be taken to the site.
There should be some good opportunities for costumes soon. The King's Speech will be opening to a wider release, and though it may not have recycled costumes, it will certainly be worth watching for costumes and for the great performances. The remake of Upstairs, Downstairs premieres in December in the U.K. and early in the year in the U.S. Also, the BBC 2, three episode program At Home with the Georgians has some great costumes, and is loaded with wonderful information about the Georgian era and the importance of home life.
November 27, 2010
I'm updating some old pages today with four new sightings, because I'm trying to get some of the pages that need updating finished because I have sooo many pages that I need to update, and I've also got to go through and re-organize all of my e-mails and submissions because I have a lot of overlap and I don't want to exclude anyone accidentally. Sorry I'm not able to work at a faster pace with my work schedule. Keep sending in submissions! They make me very happy and I'll do my best to keep the updates coming each week even if they are small.
Be on the lookout for the new Costume Chronicles sometime in the next week or so. I'll be sure to update the site when its available - you won't want to miss it, so check back soon!

Four new costumes and twenty three new sightings for you today (yes, you read that correctly). Enjoy my dears!
I am out of town again next weekend for a wedding and thus away from my computer and files, etc - and unable to update the site, so you will all have to content yourself with these sightings until the 23rd of October.
Also, I've been made aware that the feed for this site is no longer updating properly. I've been trying to fix it without much luck at all, I'm afraid. But I'll keep trying. In the meantime, please be patient while I try to work out the kinks.
October 2, 2010

Someone mentioned to me that I should watch the Annie Lennox music video Walking on Broken Glass, because the costumes were to die for, and it was inspired by the film Dangerous Liaisons - even going so far as to star John Malkovitch.
So I watched it and was surprised to find that not only were the costumes inspired by Dangerous Liaisons - in several cases, they had been used in Dangerous Liaisons.
I've updated two of the following pages with new sightings from the video...
And you can watch the video here.
But it brings up a good point. Sure, we look for recycled movie costumes in movies obviously and televsion sometimes...where else should we be looking? I recently found two commercials for Magnum Temptation chocolate that I am fairly sure have costumes from Marie Antoinette.
And then one for Sky TV HD...
Go forth. Watch! Find Recycled costumes!
So this begs the question - where else should we bee looking aside from movies and tv and sometimes book covers? Are there any other music videos or commercials you can think of that might possibly have recycled costumes?
