I am out on business this week, but I’ve scheduled this update in the queue like a week before all ya’ll are actually reading this. Fingers crossed that it actually posts (last week’s didn’t – WordPress had an error and failed to post – boo! I had to go in and manually update). If it doesn’t post…well then I’ll have to manually update when I return. So if this thing goes live Friday, sorry for the delay!
I have a big project for a big client, and I have been called on to help handle through the end of August. While I should still be able to get in updates each week without an issue, if things get super crazy, regularly scheduled updates may not happen, or might be late. I’ll try to drop a note here either way to give you all warning if that happens, as I like to keep updates really regular whenever possible. That would likely happen towards the end of August if it happens, as that’s “crunch time” as it were on the project.
We get A LOT of our photos from Fragile Memoirs, which seems to have bitten the dust. The site is still there, but the photos are gone. I don’t have contact info over there, so if anyone does, please do let me know. They’ve gone down before, so I hope this is just temporary, because if they’re gone for good, I may have to go have a good cry in a corner.
(Edited to add) I’ve also been notified that Far Far Away site is also gone. We have had two major losses for our photo sources in two weeks. This is a pretty big deal and may (or may not?) legitimately cause us some problems in future. I am hoping this trend does not continue.
If any of you know of any extensive movie photo resource sites other than the heavy hitters we use around here, please let me know. You can find a list of our usual resources here on our FAQ.
Also, a discovery at another photo website we use. MovieStillsDB (a lifesaver) shows MORE photos when you’re logged in than when you’re logged out. This is craaaazy, but good to know. Been using this site for years and figured this out just this last week.
Two super cool costumes this week. Honestly from two of my favorite designers – Walter Plunkett. Love that man. He doesn’t get enough love. He’s heavily overshadowed IMO by Adrian and Edith Head (who are also great). I know I reaffirm my love for Plunkett every time I post one of his costumes…but I can’t help it.
The other featured costume designer is Janie Bryant, who did work on Mad Men that was frankly on another level in terms of using costume to tell a story, using symbolic pieces, etc. You can read costume breakdowns at Tom and Lorenzo, which I highly recommend. I read them in real time as the show aired back in the day, but if you did not, take a day man…it’s worth it.
Also, the comment system is having some photo upload issues, but I have my developer looking into it and will keep you all updated.
Thanks everyone for your help and support!
Costume Commentary
I will seriously mourn both sites because they have been great resources over the years. I really wonder what – or as I already said under another post who – happened to these two sites. It seems very sudden and radical. FFAS even deleted all of their socials. Screencaps are a good alternative but obviously not the same a professional HQ stills from set. And both of these sites had amazing qualities which are usually only accessible if you are a member of the press and have access to the press portals of the big distributors and channels. MovieStillsDB isn’t bad either but it really relies on individual members uploading the files and sometimes you are just out of luck or the resolution is HD but not e.g. 4K as FFAS delivered.
I need to probably get access to press portals…I gotta figure that out.
I hope you’ll be able to and they recognize your site as press/journalistic because that would really make things a lot easier for older series/movies where it is hard to find pictures in good quality online. I was just reminded what a great resource Fragile Memories was because I spotted a costume for a third time which I previously only recognized as a reuse because I knew the dress from a promo picture of the original series (which I still haven’t watched) from their gallery of it and a nightly skimming through said galleries. Pinterest will never be able to replace this for me as it is way too random and has way too much AI slop on it these days.
The AI slop is getting unbearable…
Sadly the AI situation will probably only get worse. At least for now they are easy to detect, but I fear the moment it will look like legit stuff and we will waste time searching where those came from.
I agree Pinterest doesn’t replace good sites like these two, it’s a very different use I think. It can sometimes make you discover stuff you would never have found otherwise, sometimes even show you sightings one after the other… And then for 85% of the time you have the same pictures over and over again. It’s really strange.
Oh no, I was hoping Far Far Away only had a temporary issue and would come back online… Such a great source of HQ pictures!
I know you have movie screencaps and kiss them goodbye on the faq but maybe not these ones:
http://allscreencaps.com/
https://film-grab.com/movies-a-z/
https://www.cap-that.com/
https://screenmusings.org/movie/
Maybe also add on the faq that actors fansite can be a great source? There are less and less sadly, there are more instagram or facebook fan pages but there are not as easy to navigate, nor as complete…
In other news, I have been super lucky with pinterest for about a week! Pictures from shows I didn’t even know existed, or wouldn’t have thought to check (the Man from U.N.C.L.E sightings!) or even things like a cooking show? A wild few days. Would love if it happened more often!
Thank you, these are great. And I agree, actor fan sites are a good resource. It’s more work to find said individual sites each time, but I’m gonna do what I need to do, I guess. And yes, Pinterest is really starting to be a great resource!
