The Bill & Ted Test

October 1, 2025

A while back I ran into Hilary Davidson’s Bill & Ted Test. It basically means that the movie does so well with Regency Era fashion, that rating Regency movies is now called “The Bill & Ted Test.” You can read more here.

I was looking at the scene in question, and noticed this particular gown that I thought may have shown up in Vanity Fair, and indeed it had. I have a feeling the gowns worn by the Princesses are from one of the BBC Shakespeare plays from the 70s, and I’d like to find those at some point, but if someone wants to take up that challenge or has an idea of where they may have some from, please let me know.

About The AUthor

Katie is the creator of Recycled Movie Costumes, where she’s constantly haunted by the ghosts of costumes past. One day, she had an epiphany: if she had to suffer through these recycled costumes, then so should everyone else! And thus, Recycled Movie Costumes was born.

Contrary to popular belief, Katie does not have a photographic memory, nor does she work in the costume industry. She’s just a girl whose life has slowly spiraled out of control after watching too many costume dramas on Masterpiece Theatre.

Costume Commentary

  1. I like the idea of the Bill & Ted test, although I actually have never heard of the movie. Nothing really interesting from me this week. I have been fully submerged into the Swiftmania of the her new album coming out this Friday. Weren’t lucky to score a signed CD as they sold out within two minutes on the EU store and weren’t restocked unlike in the US store. But yeah I’m excited for the album and the accompaning documentary/movie. Since The Fate of Ophelia will be the lead single, I wonder if the music video may feature reuse  costumes or if it goes into an entirely different direction. I’ll guess I’ll see on Friday and can check again on Monday when it will be released on Youtube.

      • I’m back from the cinema and there is at least one scene where we should look out for the male costumes. They could be rented. I already know that one headpiece is a reuse/refit because the designer posted about it but I still need to find a good picture of its first use as well as its second before it moved onto Swift. Something I will probably do tomorrow night as I really need some sleep now. Last night was only like 90minutes of sleep which is slowly catching up with me. I will also need to edit my other submission as it also appears in the music video if I saw it correctly and there are new and more detailed pictures that just came out alongside the album’s release.

          • I did. Although I had hoped for a few more insights into the actual making of the album. Anyway, I just started to dig and it seems that this reuse hole is bigger than I imagined. But a Harper’s Bazaar interview confirmed to me that possibly all showgirl outfits are truly from the Vegas show Jubilee! and designed by Bob Mackie. Well, it doesn’t end there. They probably made two other stops on the way: Dita van Teese’s Vegas Show as well as the movie The Last Showgirl. So now I have to decide on how to work through this. I think I will watch The Last Showgirl in the next few days and then look at what pictures from both Vegas shows are available to the public.

      • The music video is out now and Taylor even included an HQ shot of the scene and therefore the costumes I meant. Maybe someone will recognize them because I feel like I’ve seen them before but I don’t know where. Btw the other people are all her Eras tour dancers, their names should be easily to find on the internet.

        • It was filmed in the US? That could give us some indication where to search (though a northern american shooting can still use costumes from european houses)

          • Very likely. She doesn’t say in the Release Party movie BUT rumor 2 or 3 months ago was that she was filming a music video in Los Angeles. Unless it was for another future single, it was very likely this one.

            • Is that….? The top left costume??

” From “The Apparel Oft Proclaims the Man” – a “Shakespeare Uncovered” Costume Exhibit now on display at WKNO through April 12, 3013. This is Mercutio’s costume from the 2011 production of “Romeo and Juliet”. By designer Bruce Bui, TN Shakespeare Company. ”
I’d need to check with the video but… It’s close, right? I can’t believe jumping from picture to picture may have worked.

              • The dancer is Sam Mcwilliams btw. And I think you might be very right. I cropped my 4K photo a bit so we can see better and to me at least it is a match. It would also be very Taylor Swift to use former Shakespeare production pieces as she said in her movie she is a fan of his plays. So maybe that’s where the others are from as well.

                  • I looked into Lucia’s picture as well and I think we have three separate uses here actually. Obviously Mercutio in the 2011 Royal Shakespeare Company first and my guess is since on their website they talk about their 2011 New York residency that the costumes stayed back in the US which is why it ended up with the Tenessee Shakespeare Company in 2014. Well and then we, for now, lose track of the doublet until it appeared in The Fate of Ophelia.

                    • It seems to have been made for the Tennesse Shakespeare Company in 2011
                      https://tnshakespeare.org/event/romeo-and-juliet-2010/  (with video)
And on this link we have a cast! : https://www.broadwayworld.com/memphis/article/TSCs-ROMEO-AND-JULIET-Opens-427-20110328
The cast also includes company members Slade Kyle (Mercutio, Prince, Friar John), Michael Khanlarian (Capulet, Apothecary), Matthew Crewse (Nurse, Montague, Paris), and Darius Wallace (Friar Laurence, Peter). Newcomers include Adam Maldonado (Benvolio) and local musicians John Ross(guitarist) and Jon Epting (percussionist).
Bruce Bui (Othello, Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Night’s Dream), resident designer at Ballet Memphis, will design costumes

Then in 2014 on this link: https://www.broadwayworld.com/memphis/article/TN-Shakespeare-Co-to-Present-ROMEO-AND-JULIET-at-GPAC-128-30-20140127
Returning to the TSC stage are Slade Kyle (Nurse, Tybalt), Cara McHugh (Lady Capulet), and Phil Darius Wallace* (Capulet, Apothecary). Performing for the first time with TSC are Isaac Anderson (Mercutio), Guillermo Jemmott (Benvolio), and Jamie Mann (Friar).

The University of Memphis ensemble includes Elizabeth Baines, Grace Bowers, Justin Burgess, Liz Kellicut, Matthew Nelson, and Joshua Tucker.

The design team includes the return of Bruce Bui’s costumes with his associates Ashley Selberg and Haley Franklin
So that’s the tnc production in 2011 for which the costume was made, then it featured in the costume exhibit in 2013, then the tnc 2014’s production reused the costumes.

        • Potentially another one:

These are promotionnal posters for Reign season 1. It’s the first time I see these ones, and I don’t remember the character wearing that in the actual show. I mean, sure I only watched the beginning, but I saw a lot of pictures from it, and I never saw this costume.
At first I thought it was wrong because of the opening on the arm in the Taylor Swift picture, but on the closest Reign picture we can see what could be a closed opening on the arm, laced tight. There is also a darker red band at the bottom of the jacket in the Taylor Swift costume, but it could have been added later.
I think Reign was filmed in England, but I’m not 100% sure, and if the costume was only used in promo and not in the show, well… The promo pictures could have been made in the US.
If it is the same costume, it is likely a reuse in this promo poster.

          • I also don’t remember it in the series but it looks like a good match (I will need to look at it again on PC). I think some of Mary’s s1 promotional dresses also weren’t worn in the series, so it’s not unprecedented for the series either. Reign actually mostly filmed in Toronto and Ireland. So with Toronto we already have North America which would make this quite likely. The dancer is Whyley Yoshimura btw

  2. I found some of the BBC plays on internet archive. I’ve actually started to do screencaps on two of those, not always easy since there are subtitles that can’t be removed.
I love this Bill and Ted test story, plus it’s nice to see some addition in the medieval section!
