Reused Robes

September 24, 2025

Both costumes this week are robes – that wasn’t intentional, but it’s funny how those things happen.

Hope you all are having a great week! Not much to report here, but I will be back next week with new updates.

About The AUthor

Katie is the creator of Recycled Movie Costumes, where she’s constantly haunted by the ghosts of costumes past. One day, she had an epiphany: if she had to suffer through these recycled costumes, then so should everyone else! And thus, Recycled Movie Costumes was born.

Contrary to popular belief, Katie does not have a photographic memory, nor does she work in the costume industry. She’s just a girl whose life has slowly spiraled out of control after watching too many costume dramas on Masterpiece Theatre.

  1. I wish robes but especially night gowns were reused more often. Or maybe I’m just bad at spotting the latter.

This week I followed a promising lead and was promtly rewarded. A while back I got the trailer for Call My Agent Berlin as an ad on instagram and immediately saw there was at least one scene with period costumes which means they were highly likely rented instead of newly made. Then Theaterkunst posted they were contracted for the series and I already placed bets with myself which dress may be worn by Emilia Schüle. And Bingo, it was one of the ones I already knew and documented. Sometimes it’s worth playing detective.

          • Yeah, my first spotting of it is from 2000 and since it was a documentary I’m not sure whether it was custom made for it or whether it was rented from a costume house. Since I assume it is owned by Theaterkunst. I wonder whether it is originally from Catherine the Great with Catherine Zeta Jones, however, the other dresses they have in stock from that movie are way more…luxurious in my opinion. And since so far I have only been able to find that movie in an awful quality I haven’t been able to check whether my guess is correct or not.

      • Thia reminds me that I have actually never watched the movie. Maybe I should, so we can maybe figure out this mystery robe’s fate. Although I’m binging Marie Antoinette (2022) right. It’s my third attempt and I finally connected with the series.

        • I haven’t tried this show yet, but a few weeks ago I noticed a copy of the famous Marie Antoinette necklace (aka the one she never actually bought, which already had a page on here) in a picture of the masquerade ball in Brigerton’s fourth season, and it seems to be the one used in Marie Antoinette second season! I almost posted about it here, but then I wondered if it would be worth it to search for other replicas of this necklace before.

            • Oh yes please to the both of you. I love replicas of original pieces. Which reminds me that I once checked whether the Downton Abbey and the The Crown version of The Vladimir Tiara are the same. They are not. If I remember correctly, Downton‘s was bigger than The Crowns, which means there are at least two costume jewellery replicas of this tiara that until very recently was still worn very often by a reigning monarch (I don’t think Camila or Catherine have worn it since Elizabeth II’s death).

                • Not Lucia but pretty sure that is the one she is referring to. I just cross-referenced it to the Marie Antoinette (2022) one and I doubt it is the same. The bows are different as can be seen in a very lovely close up shot in the first episode of the second season. However this would mean that Bridgerton‘s either comes from somewhere else or, if it was originally made for the show, Marie Antoinette is referenced in some way. The necklace is unique, I doubt it is conincidence. It’s also interesting that Bridgerton’s has pink ribbons when the original has blue ones. The series meanwhile went with diamond studded. The picture upload isn’t working for me again. I don’t know why. I hit submit and nothing happens.

Edit: Let’s see if I can embed it if I upload it somewhere else.

            • It might be interesting to wait for the beginning of Bridgerton’s fourth season to see if the character wearing this replica is a plot point. She is dressed in what could be a Marie Antoinette costume so it’s very possible. Also it could be interesting to know if that’s the case in the book?
Would it be for the site or the blog?

              • I am not sure – it might be a blog post! Since it’s “Reused, but not really” – which could be a series of things that show up again and again – specifically items from history, that are remade for various production, but not actually reused? That’s kind of what I am thinking, but not 100% sure.  It would depend – if there IS an actual reuse between two pieces, then I could put it on a page and list the others in the gallery as talking points.

    • This reminds me that I wanted to check the period costumes in one episode of the French Call My Agent but I always forget to get to it! I watched it very long ago, before I got interested in reused costumes, but yeah, it has to be rented stuff.
