They really are everywhere!

Finding the same clothing has started to leak into my real life!

I had The Residence on in the background. It takes place at a state dinner at the White House, so there are lots of people in evening wear. I looked up to see a familiar dress, but it wasn’t from another tv show…it was the same gown that was owned by my mother. I quickly sent her a screenshot, and she confirmed that she did indeed have the same gown. I suppose I cannot escape this strange super power.

I also watched The Lady’s Companion (kind of). I am very much a “put it on in the background” kind of person. I had this sense that there were lots of reused costumes, but I couldn’t place any except for one, which I may post next week. But if any of you find any, let me know. It’s a very bright, colorful show.

We’ve got two new costumes today, and of the four films/television shows featured in them, three of them are new to this site. I always love being able to add a new production to the roster of films with reused costumes.

About a year ago I did a interview with Articles of Interest, which I didn’t realize had gone live. I found it the other day here, so please check it out!

Check back next week and keep sending in your submissions!

About The AUthor

Katie is the creator of Recycled Movie Costumes, where she’s constantly haunted by the ghosts of costumes past. One day, she had an epiphany: if she had to suffer through these recycled costumes, then so should everyone else! And thus, Recycled Movie Costumes was born.

Contrary to popular belief, Katie does not have a photographic memory, nor does she work in the costume industry. She’s just a girl whose life has slowly spiraled out of control after watching too many costume dramas on Masterpiece Theatre.

  1. What a neat article – and linked further reading. Especially about Marilyn’s dresses. I still don’t know if they were silk. But I think, we here are not even that worse off, sleuthing wise. Really had to giggle at the ‘hippie SS tops’ label. Huch. As well as smile at your polite ‘I mean. I love when there is a new movie with a costume I haven’t seen before.’ I wonder if there was a ‘but’ to it before redaction? Like – as the article mentions earlier: Sometimes it’s so nice to see an elaborate costume get a second (or third) chance to shine in a different production. Maybe in full length. Or finally ‘better’ lighting. As opposed to the endless number of visibly strapped down new historical garments so pared back and ‘norm core’, in some instances one can hardly track them back to an individual production. Like everything else, producing movies – period set ones especially – gets more and more expensive, to the point of gross imbalance. And it shows.

    • I wish I remembered more about the interview! It was over a year ago, but I remember it was fun to talk clothes with her. I do love a movie with new costumes, but if they were all new I’d have no content, so I guess it works out. I’ve got a new find that looks willldly different, and I am not even sure if it is reused or not. But there are too many similarities (same fabric) to discount it. Curious to see what you think. I’ll post it in a couple of weeks.

  2. The article was great! I wonder if it got people to check the site and start searching for sightings themself.

Personally, I’ve been obsessed with an article I found a couple of days ago:
    https://people.com/bridgerton-star-florence-hunt-reveals-link-to-princess-diana-dress-season-3-8648004

“Speaking at the season 3 premiere of the series on May 13, actress Florence Hunt revealed to PEOPLE that she had the honor of wearing a dress cut from the same fabric as one of Princess Diana’s dresses.

“I wore this beautiful blue dress, and I believe it was a cut off from Princess Diana’s dress that she wore at some point,” Hunt, 17, tells PEOPLE at the New York City premiere.

“A cut off from one of her dresses that they made for Princess Diana and they made a dress out of that fabric, which was mental. It’s crazy, yeah,” she adds, noting it is favorite look her character wears in the new season.

I can’t quite believe what I read? And that there’s nothing more about it, just this comment on the red carpet once?
Still, have I spend way too long searching for Hyacinthe’s dresses and for Princess Diana’s pictures? Yes.
And searching for that I got into a bit of confusing realisation. That this Hyacinth dress, already online as a recut from a season 1 dress:

Look A LOT like this other Hyacinthe dress three episodes later:

Almost like they just changed the position of the white embrodery on the top and added another layer of sheer lace fabric on top of the other?
And yet, it might just be that they used a similar cut for several of the character’s gowns? Very close, yet many different details, I would love to see people’s thoughts on this!
(if you want more pictures: https://www.cap-that.com/bridgerton/?seasonthree  episode 2 then 5)

    • I’m currently gifing A LOT of the costumes of Bridgerton and while I haven’t done Hyacinth yet, I’m currently doing Daphne. I don’t think the second dress is the same one actually because Bridgerton does use similar cuts and fabrics all the time. There are a lot of Daphne’s season 01 costumes where I went like “Huh? I thought that’s the same dress as earlier but nope you changed x, y or z.” However, since the first reuse came from an old Daphne dress, I would recommend also looking at them to maybe find a match.
I do however wonder about the Diana dress reuse now too. I’m unfortunately not too knowledgeable with her clothes as I’m more of a modern royals follower (a girl has her guilty pleasures) but I know that there is a community of royal watchers on tumblr. It might be worth asking them about this. Not sure whether it is invite only or public. If it is invite only, please tell me as I’m a member and could invite you or ask the question for you, whatever you prefer.

      • Yeah, you’re probably right! While adding another lace layer on the skirt wouldn’t be very hard, the changes in the sleeves for example make a lot less sense. It reminds me of the costumes for Helen Mirren in Elizabeth I, where they had one pattern for 90% of her costumes, and just did it in different fabrics (with a couple looking very similar). It would be interesting to search for more reuse of season 1 dresses later on though!

There was one Diana dress that I found interesting because she had it recut so it would make sense for some fabric to remain, but I don’t find a match in Hyacinth so… I don’t want to spam this comment section with all Hyacinth blue dresses and all the Diana ones, so I’m not sure what’s the best way to keep the discussion and search going. I’m not super familiar with discord so I’m not sure how useful it would be, and anyway that means moderation and work and everything.
        I don’t have a tumblr sorry!

  3. I’ll check out your interview later. Seeing my submission go live this week really lightened my mood after my laptop drama. My old one is about as moody as a teenager. It was a whole ordeal to get it to work and then after two days, it now has issues again. Well, I’m in no mood to play detective again right now. But at least yesterday my cousin finally brought around my current laptop. The harddrive is dead and gone but I got a new SSD and a fresh Windows install with all the drivers installed by him now. Sometimes it is great to have a huge family and a cousin that does IT and software work for a huge company. So my laptop was nothing for him. Now I just need to reinstall every program. I dread it but I’m also excited.
I also wanted to watch the Lady’s companion series but I haven’t come around to it just yet. Maybe while I reinstall all the programs

    • I am really sorry about the laptop drama. I know not having a working computer can make you feel like you have your hands tied behind your back. If you lived close to me, I’d let you borrow one of mine. I have…an inordinate amount of computers. Glad things are looking up and you had someone who could help you. Good luck with re-installing the programs!

      • Thank you so much. I only had three computers in my life: a PC from 2002-2010, my Samsung R780-Hero from 2010-2021 and now my MSI. I’m amazed at just how fast an SSD is. Like that’s going from dial up to modern fiber optic internet. In a way, this was a blessing in disguise as I now have a clean install of Windows 10 with all the newest drivers and a fast, nearly empty SSD. Basically a clean fresh start into a faster future.

          • Me too. It’s amazing how fast it is. Unfortunately, I just discovered that my folder of screenshots wasn’t saved as I thought. This means I will have to start over entirely. On one hand, it gives me a clean folder, on the other I lost so much work I put into acquiring them. I will just have to work with that now. So sorry if I accidentally submit something again I already did in the past, I can’t just look into my archive anymore.

              • I probably should have done this too, since I refrain from using OneDrive as it is known to mess with game files, especially Sims 2 doesn’t handle it well. Well, it’s a lesson learned for the future.

                • OMG! Do you play The Sims? Sims2 is great. I had SOOOOO many downloads. I still have them somewhere. I’ve since shifted to Sims4, which is in some ways too complex to be as fun as Sims2.  I don’t love it like I did The Sims2. I don’t play often. I play probably once a year for a couple of weeks, stay up until 3 AM and the put it away for another year.  I love it.

                  • Yes, I do and my play rhythm is about the same. I received my first expansion pack (Open for Business) for Easter in 2006 when I wasn’t even 10 years old yet. My older female cousin had introduced us younger ones to the Sims 1 and then my other male cousin owned The Sims 2 which we played all the time in winter. My first PC and my old laptop just couldn’t handle Sims 3, so I never moved past Sims 2. I do have Sims 4 in my EA library next to the Sims 2 Ultimate Collection but I never really felt compelled to play it since I prefer Sims 2’s neighborhood system. Also my game is so heavily modded…or well was…or is on its way back there as I’m currently rebuilding my Downloads folder. I only had a backup from 5 years ago and so I decided to just use the opportunity and start over again because there was also a lot of junk in it.
I feel lucky now that when EA ran that I-LOVE-THE-SIMS promotion years ago where you could get The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection for free for a certain amount I grabbed it despite owning the disc versions. These days most laptop’s don’t even have a drive anymore. Now you can only get the Legacy Edition which you first off have to pay for, secondly apparently has some bugs that never existed in the old version and thirdly even removed some content like the IKEA pack. Anyhow, without the community that is still running strong, and I would argue stronger than ever before, that game would be unplayable but there are so many fixes, conversions and new content these days that I can get most Sims 4 features now even in Sims 2, so I don’t even feel urge to even try Sims 4 again 😀 Now we only need to fix pink flashing. Some apparently have my moving to Linux but that’s not something I’m going to do, also because the issue very rarely happens for me unlike others (this is also the problem why no one has fixed it yet because we don’t know for certain what actually causes it).

                    • I work on a mac for the most part (graphic designer, can’t get away from it). I keep PCs almost entirely because I’m unwilling to stop playing  the Sims. I didn’t realize Sims 2 had been so heavily modded with stuff from Sims 4. I may have to go back at some point. Thank you!

  4. I read your interview Article and wow how amazing it was, i loved that you have a lot people sends in submissions of reused costumes too your site….
I want ask have you thought about making other page on your site and put like era like 1101-1820s or tv shows/movies, props or jewellerys/accessories of reused costumes and people sumbits and helps you get up each other reused costumes up sooner on your site…and it get pubiled sooner

    • No, I am pretty happy with the time period classifications as they are. I’ve spent a lot of time and money creating this site and doing another overhaul just isn’t in the cards. And there really isn’t any way I can get submissions up sooner, unless I have more time, which may happen in the next year or so.

    • Okey, i understands and i love your site and loves all reused costumes on site too….i cant wait see my reused costumes on your site in future
