Heavily Sighted
April 9, 2025
A regal costume sighted by not one, but three of you today! I have to be careful with sightings from multiple people. I never want to leave someone out, especially if their contribution came in earlier. If I ever leave you out, please holler at me, as it wasn’t intentional. This site is…how many years old? I have to think. 2009. That’s what – sixteen years? I’ve got contributions on the site, via email, via twitter, tumblr, etc.
Another contribution…from yours truly. I just ran across it, as with most costumes, quite by accident. Most things I find now are generally when I’m busy screencapping something else. Do any of you have this problem?
It’s funny, I think about this site sometimes. When I was encouraged to start the site by a friend (previously sightings were printed in a three ring binder and shown to anyone who would humor me!) I sort of thought that we’d find 200, maybe 250 costumes and then we wouldn’t find any more. Even though it was my hobby, I still didn’t really understand the scope of reused costumes. That seems silly now, as the reuse of costumes is an ongoing process. It will keep going on for as long as television and films are being made.
Hope all of you have a fantastic week! Happy sighting!

About The AUthor

Katie is the creator of Recycled Movie Costumes, where she’s constantly haunted by the ghosts of costumes past. One day, she had an epiphany: if she had to suffer through these recycled costumes, then so should everyone else! And thus, Recycled Movie Costumes was born.
Contrary to popular belief, Katie does not have a photographic memory, nor does she work in the costume industry. She’s just a girl whose life has slowly spiraled out of control after watching too many costume dramas on Masterpiece Theatre.

Oh I know the feeling. You just want to take one quick screencap and then “Oh I know you…I’m not sure where from yet but better take a screenshot of you as well.” No wonder my old screencap folder was quite full and heavy. Do you also have some costumes that feel like your pet project in terms of spotting? One of mine just jumped at me again this week when I continued watching the vampire series Love Sucks. I stopped at episode 04 after release because I liked it but also wasn’t 100% hooked. Then I got a reel this week from the series where I was like “Wait a sec. I know you!” And it was literally the very first scene of the next episode I hadn’t watched yet 😀 Anyhow, here it is, entry number 7 for this dress:

There is still a ten year gap between it’s very first use in 1995 and first reuse (that I know of) in 2005. I wonder whether it truly just sat in storage or I just haven’t found the project(s) it was in inbetween yet.-
Thank you! I am sure it has to have been in use in between at some point. I am sure it will pop up at some point.

I just took a look at what other productions reused Catherine the Great (1995)’s costumes and I think I might need to check out Brotherhood of the Wolf sooner or later. Of course not a guarantee but it seems very likely that if it was reused it might have been pulled for this, and they might have been the ones who also slightly altered it by removing some gold trimming.

This makes a lot of sense. You may be right.

I already have that sighting but good catch. So far my research into this dress has yielded that it is currently owned by Theaterkunst, who also made it back in the day for Catherine the Great (1995). It then appears in Schiller (2005), Rapunzel (2009), Vom Fischer und seiner Frau (2013) and, as you mentioned, in Helene, die wahre Braut (2020), next to the aforementioned most recent sighting in Love Sucks. There is also a behind the scenes picture of an extra wearing it for Smaragdgrün (2016), however I didn’t see it while watching the movie itself. Probably a well hidden extra.

Yes, it is worn again in Allerleirauh on the other princess everyone wants the King to court. I think her name was Larissa but I would have to check again. I submitted that one somewhen last year I think but I can’t even imagine how big Katie’s backlog is at this point. On one hand I envy her that she sees all these reused first but on the other I’m happy I don’t have to sort through all of them.
