About the Costume

This floral robe a la Française was first worn by Mary Nighy as the Princesse de Lamballe in the 2006 production of Marie Antoinette.

The gown was worn again twice in Turn: Washinton’s Spies. First in the 2016 third season episode Hearts and Minds on Amy Gumenick as Philomena Cheer, where the stomacher appears to have been altered, with the bows (eschelle) having been replaced with blue ribbon.

The stomacher was altered again in its second use in the 2017 season, when it was worn by an uncredited extra in the last episode, the appropriately titled Washington Spies.

  1. I don’t think that’s Mary Nighy’s Lamballe wearing the costume in question but another courtlady/extra I couldn’t make out. But Philomena Cheer is a really fun character name. Almost as good as Philomena Cunk…(ツ)
Should I give Turn a watch after all?

    • I agree, I wasn’t totally sold on it being Mary either. I looked around to see if the photo was labeled anywhere oline, and it was labeled on only one single website as being Mary (all other sites just listed nothing or Dust only). I went ahead and went with Mary, but do agree that I don’t actually think it’s her. I may swap out to an extra at some point. I need to look deeper into it. I don’t think this person would be listed in the cast list.

Yes, Philomena Cheer was a name that surprised me. A lot of fun!  I’ve not seen Turn myself, but I’ve heard good things. I figure since it ran for four (???) seasons it has to be decent enough. I need t watch it, but I have not either. I’ve just seen photos floating around and wind up finding reused costumes that way (it’s a curse! Blessing???)
