About the Costume

Though the men’s costumes from 1938 The Adventures of Robin Hood started showing up in other historical epics, space operas, and sitcoms pretty much right away, the gowns designed for Olivia De Havilland by Milo Anderson took a few years to be used again.

This dark burgundy or purple velvet gown and a few others show up in the 1950 The Flame and the Arrow, a “Robin Hood” story set in medieval Italy. It was worn by Lynn Baggett as Francesca.

It was used twice in 1954, first in Prince Valiant on a courtier and then in King Richard and the Crusaders, worn by Paula Raymond as Queen Berengaria.

The costume was adapted over the years, with the high neckline of the 1930s getting progressively re-cut to reflect the necklines of the 1950s.
