About the Costume

Here is a costume I cannot quite unravel. While these hats – used on Billie Pipe in Shadow in the North, and Dakota Fanning in The Alienist, may or may not be the same. There is so much that is common, that it seems that it was easily made over and is indeed the same….but there is enough that is different to possibly discount the reuse.

Costume Commentary

  1. The five-striped ribbon is indeed impressively alike. But the hat on Billie Piper looks like made from a (bit wobbly) straw body – while the one on Dakota Fanning looks firmer and like covered in or made from a smoother textile. Damask, moiree or some other woven one. Stripping and re-covering the straw/paper hat in textile would be such an effort, I’d say they’re two hats who happened to be decorated with the same wide ribbon.
