About the Costume

This interesting piece was seen in the 2001 David Starkey documentary, The Six Wives of Henry VIII on actress Michelle Abrahams as Katheryn Howard. It was also in the 2007 first season of The Tudors, where it was worn by Maria Doyle Kennedy as Katharine of Aragon.

This headdress almost certainly originated from the 1998 production of Elizabeth with costumes by Alexandra Byrne. The film had a few unused garments that never made their way onto the screen, and the headdress also bears a striking resemblance to a black one that was used, which leads one to believe that perhaps a color change was requested, causing the black headdress to be created and the brown one to never be used.

  1. Do you buy any chance know what this hat would be called? I seen it on a dollmaking site and have been trying to find the name to do some research. I have found gable hoods, french hoods, attifets…

    • I don’t know how historically accurate this piece actually is. French hoods did come in various different styles, so I would say it is an attifet with a french hood mounted to the back.

  2. Actually, the black one from the 1998 movie Elizabeth was also used in the first season of Showtime’s The Tudors and was also worn by Maria Doyle Kennedy as Katharine of Aragon.
