About the Costume

First worn by Helen Mirren as Queen Charlotte in the 1994 film The Madness of King George, these distinctive earrings went on to be used in multiple films. In 1995 Catherine Zeta-Jones wore them as Catherine the Great in the television movie of the same name. They were worn twice in 1996 – first by Greta Scacchi as Tsarina Alexandra in Rasputin, as well as by Frances Barber as Lady Jersey in A Royal Scandal. Both the 1999 mini-series Aristocrats and the 2001 film The Affair of the Necklace used the earrings on extras. The jewelry would not be seen again until 2009 when Iben Hjejle wore them as Queen Sofia Magdalena in Gustav III:s äktenskap (The Marriage of Gustav III). In 2010 they were seen in two episodes of Upstairs, Downstairs, first in the jewelry box of Lady Agnes in the season one episode The Fledgling, and later in the season on an uncredited actress as Marina, Duchess of Kent in the episode entitled The Cuckoo.
