Costume Commentary

  1. Yes, of course, Edward. They’re the daughters of an Earl, and they have to look demure… The Crawleys live in a world when the exterior counts even more than the character or the heart, they have a good opinion to keep… (from the others)… And Lavinia Swire is more like a simple girl, with the biggest and warmest heart, and it is clear that she prefers to go unnoticed. Plus, Mary and Edith (not Sybil, since she was a nurse) have to look perfect all the time, because that’s demanded from them, given their status, and such thing doesn’t happen with Lavinia… (it would have happened if someday she could become Queen of Downton… poor girl…)

  2. I’ve always liked this gown on Zoe Boyle, because it shows the fashion in town, while the Crawley family lives in the country. I mean, when Miss Swire first appears, wearing this one, I noticed that its skirt was shorter than Mary’s or Edith’s, and it gives a hint of the evolution of fashion, meanwhile in the country there’s a more “traditional” style…

    • Plus it’s so much looser and modern, and its not that the clothes the girls are wearing are from the country, its that their fashion choices are much more conservative, all of Mary’s clothes are probably from London, or even Paris.
