About the Costume

Dorothy Jeakins designed this beautiful wedding dress for use on Julie Andrews as Maria Rainer in the 1965 classic The Sound of Music. The gown was described in an auction catalog as follows:

The gown has a stand-away collar, piping trim to the neckline and waistline, long slender sleeves, a raised waistline to the front that graduates to a gathered train to the back, decorative fabric-covered buttons with loop closures running down the center back of the gown, silk organza lining to the bodice, and a graduated hemline.

The gown was used again in 1968 in the Fox Studios produced television show The Ghost and Mrs. Muir in the second episode entitled The Haunted Honeymoon, where Yvonne Craig wore it as Gladys Zimmermann. However, the gown has undergone some alterations.

The costume eventually made its way into the private collection of Jane Withers. It is possible that she purchased it in 1971 when Fox Studios sold off the majority of their costumes and props. The gown went up for auction in 2013 at Julien’s Auctions, and the listing made a note of “post-production alterations” that further support the gown having been used in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and possibly other productions as well. The dress sold for $23,040.
