About the Costume

The first known appearance for this unique coat was in the 1981 mini-series Brideshead Revised, where it was worn by an extra. Because it was not worn by a main character, chances are it was not made for Brideshead Revisted, but originated with an earlier production. The costume went on to be used on two more extras – first in the 1983 Pirates of Penzance, and in 1985 in Out of Africa, before being worn by Susan Hampshire as Esme Harkness in The Grand in 1998. In 2002 it was worn by Beatriz Batarda as Annette Forsyte in The Forsyte Saga: To Let, before finally appearing in the Poirot episode The Hollow, when it was worn by Sarah Miles as Lucy Angkatell.

Costume Commentary

  1. As noted here previously by a visitor to your site, this costume appears on an extra in the 1983 film The Pirates of Penzance. (I wouldn’t be surprised if it was created specifically for the film.)
