About the Costume

This dress is interesting because while costumes are often made in duplicates for filming purposes, this one actually shows up on the screen on two different people at the same time! Both actresses Jo Anderson and Delane Matthews wear a pair of matching dresses with elaborate gold and silver beaded collars for a fashion show in an episode of HBO’s brilliant series From the Earth to the Moon, where they play the characters of Pat White and Pat McDivitt in the episode The Original Wives Club. However, while meant to look similar, the dresses appear to have minor differences in the beading of the collars, and the dress worn by Jo Anderson appears to have a seam in the front, while the one worn by Delane Matthews does not.

The costume worn by Jo Anderson appears to be the one that has been recycled over the years. It was spotted being worn by Peyton List as Jane Sterling in the episode Christmas Comes But Once a Year in AMC’s excellent series Mad Men. It was worn again by Kristen Wiig as Cynthia Morehouse in the 2014 production The Spoils of Babylon.

  1. I’m not sure where one could get something similar off the rack – vintage stores might be a good place to start. Get the base of the dress and then you could make the collar with findings and beads from a craft store.
