This stunning gown was made for the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons, where it was worn by Glenn Close as the Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil. In 1990 it was worn again by Madonna at the MTV Music Awards for her performance of the song “Vogue.”

    A contributor on wikipedia’s Glenn Close page states that Close keeps all of her costumes and that she personally lent this gown to Madonna for the awards show. The author also claimed Close rented some of her costumes to exhibits.

    The cited source is a story on the website for William & Mary College (Close’s alma mater) about a costume exhibition there in 2013. There’s a very small gallery of photos of some of the pieces, with credit to items belonging to Close’s personal collection.

    I think it’s likely a fan wrote the wiki article and made assumptions about the costumes based on a few meager facts. It does seem that Close did get to keep some of her costume duplicates from various films—perhaps a clause she negotiated in her contracts after becoming a powerful star.
    
    The wiki article also mentions that Close later donated her costume collection to Indiana University Bloomington in 2017.
