About the Costume

This gorgeous dress with embroidered gold leaves and flowers has been several times since appearing in 1996. Karyn Parsons first wore it as a Lady in Waiting in the 1996 mini-series Gulliver’s Travels. In 1999, bows were added to the bodice when Anne Marie Duff wore it as Louisa Lennox in the mini-series Aristocrats. Six years later, the 2005 PBS production Nova: Einstein’s Big Idea saw the costume worn by Ty Glaser as Marie Anne Lavoisier. The following year, an extra wore the dress in the 2006 film Marie Antoinette. That same year the gown was spotted in the Doctor Who episode The Girl in the Fireplace, where Angel Coulby wore it as Katherine.

Costume Commentary

  1. The actress in “E=mc² – Einstein’s big idea” is Hélène de Fougerolles as Emilie de Châtelet, not Ty Glaser as Mme Lavoisier.

  2. The dress in the first picture (Doctor Who) isn’t this dress. That dress is Margaret Lockwoods ball dress from “The Slipper and the Rose”

  3. I’ve found this costume in Gulliver’s Travels (1996). I tried to locate a DVD but have only been able to get it on VHS, so these are digital photos. Not very good quality, I’m afraid, but you can tell it’s the same costume. The gown is worn by an extra playing a Lady in Waiting.
