About the Costume

This striped gown was likely designed by Paule Mangenot or Carine Sarfati, both of whom are credited with costuming for the 1989 film Valmont. Annette Bening wore the gown as Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil before it went on to be used again on an extra in the 1994 film The Night and the Moment. The piece was seen a third time in the 2009 Louis XV, le Soleil Noir, where it was worn by an extra.

Costume Commentary

  1. Valmont is streaming for free on The Roku Channel, and American Friends, Henry V (1989), Wuthering Heights (2011), Copying Beethoven, Much Ado About Nothing, A Knight’s Tale, The Madness of King George, and Rob Roy.

VUDU also has some of those titles in their free section. Last month I watched W.E. and The Four Feathers on vudu, but neither is currently available for free. I believe they still have The Man in the Iron Mask.
