Costume Commentary
Nice Gown 🙂
I noticed that film on netflix the other day, but was a little apprehensive about watching it because of Dafoe. How was it? (How was he?)
It is truly terrible. He is bad, everyone in it is bad…oh God, it’s so bad…and it wants so hard to be good.
Okay, thanks for the frank review. (I’ll save myself the aggravation.) There are some things I’m willing to put myself through for the sake of taking in the costumes, but 18th century isn’t my specialty — although I totally ADORE that period.
It’s my very favourite period, so I hear you I will sit through things too. This one I had to fast forward through. I couldn’t make it. It’s trying really hard to be Valmont or Dangerous Liaisons, and it’s just not. It’s on netflix, so if you want to just take a look at the (few) scenes that have costumes, you can. But they all appear to be from Valmont for the most part – so if you’ve seen that, then you’re not missing too terribly much from this film. Costumes really comprise maybe about 10-15 minutes, so I did a quick scan for recycled costumes once I discovered the movie was not worth watching, and then moved on.
Good to know!
Oh, but here’s an example of a charming little film with lovely 18th century costumes — some of the prettiest costumes I’ve seen for this period. (None of the opulence such as that of the court gowns in The Aristocrats, although I love those, too). The film is adapted from an 18th century comedy play. Hawthorne and Collins are both outstanding, and Emma Chambers is a hoot!

I’ve seen this one about, but never watched it! If you recommend it, then I will absolutely try to get a hold of it and watch it. Thank you!
I found some clips on yt, and an on-screen interview with the costume designer!
