About the Costume

This gorgeous embroidered gown was first seen in the 2006 Jeanne Poisson, Marquise de Pompadour (Madame De Pompadour: The King’s Favourite), where Hélène de Fougerolles wore it as Jeanne Poisson. It is most likely that the dress was made for this production, though that is unknown.

In 2012 the costume appeared on Alicia Vikander as Caroline Mathilde in En kongelig affære (A Royal Affair), where it appears trim was added around the neckline and the sleeves. In addition, it appears to have been altered from being a robe à la française to a robe à l’anglaise. 

The gown appeared for a third time in the 2017 season of Poldark, where Ruby Bentall wore it as Verity Poldark. However, alterations once again made the dress look different, with lace and trim having been removed.
