About the Costume

This blue and white striped gown, worn by Kirsten Dunst as Marie Antoinette in Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film Marie Antoinette, appears again nearly two decades later on Connie Jenkins-Greig as Young Violet Ledger in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story in 2023.

I went back and forth on this one for quite a while. The gown is never shown close up in Marie Antoinette, so the striping can read differently depending on the shot and resolution. But close inspection makes it clear that the fabric pattern is the same. The curve of the skirt panels matches, as does the trim placement. The bow may have been swapped out, and it’s difficult to determine whether the engageante lace cuffs are original or replacements, as there simply isn’t enough resolution onscreen to be certain.

What ultimately convinced me was discovering another gown that both Dunst and Jenkins-Greig share. Given that they are similar in size and clearly shared costumes, it lends further credence to this gown being one and the same.
