Costume Commentary
This dress also appears on the “Rival to a Queen” book cover
Is it me or is this extra in Elizabeth, The Golden Agre wearing the green dress?
You are correct!
Thanks 🙂
worn again by helen mcrory as queen elizabeth I in “bill” (2015). lt seems to be a different skirt though, fuller shape with a peplum and a different fabric. are there any full lenght pictures of the dress on helen mirren?
yeah, the skirt is definately different. I’ll see if I can find a full length of Mirren. Thanks, Anna!
I hate this one in Anne Boleyn. The costume simply doesn’t fit Natalie… But it does in Joely Richardson as Catherine Parr…
In “Rival to the Queen”, by Carolly Erickson. I asume that the girl who’s wearing it is portraying Lettie Knollys, Queen Elizabeth’s cousin and rival…
Both of the gowns on this cover appeared on Helen Mirren in “Elizabeth I”.
I’m pretty sure that actress is Paola Dionisotti. I recognized her from The House of Eliott as Madame Partini. And in fact, BBC’s website confirms it.

this was worn as well by the actress impersonating queen elizabeth in the docu “king james’s bible – the book that changed the world” from 2011. it was worn with the same upstanding lace collar that is to be seen on the cover of the novel.
This was also featured on Carolly Erickson’s “Rival to a queen” cover, suprisingly they re-used two different but similar dresses on the cover.
She wears the same dress again without the undershirt and it looks way better.
This dress was also worn by Catherine Parr as played by Joely Richardson in “The Tudors”
Oh God, the fit on Natalie is SO AWFUL! Did the designer not realize that this costume was made for someone who is over twice her age? Not even that ugly cawl thing could mask the fact that her boobs were about to fall all over the place.
I know…sometimes the fit in this show is so awful it makes me want to cry. When I see all of the sleeves falling off the shoulders of the extras in the background it makes me especially freaked out.
