About the Costume

This uniquely detailed gown originated with Clémence Poésy’s portrayal of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots in 2004’s miniseries Gunpowder, Treason & Plot.

The padding around the sleeves was removed for the piece in the first episode of the 2017 production of Gunpowder, where it was worn by an uncredited actress as Anne of Denmark.

The costume made a third appearance in The Spanish Princess 2020’s second season episode Flodden, where Amelia Gething wore it as Ursula Pole.

The costume is a bit of a chameleon, color-wise. In Gunpowder, Treason & Plot, the detailing on the bodice appears almost silver, but The Spanish Princess shows the bodice is the approximate color of the skirt, which seems to be a light orange/salmon.
