About the Costume

First used in 2008’s The Other Boleyn Girl by Scarlett Johansson as Mary Boleyn, this costume was reused just a year later for the cover of Josephine Wilkinson’s 2009 novel Mary Boleyn. What is more interesting is that the photo used on the cover seems to have been taken from an image used to promote the film The Other Boleyn Girl! The image has been cropped and reversed, but it’s the same image.

Costume Commentary

  1. This dress in that book cover has an explanation: apparently, the fictionalized story of Mary Boleyn told in “The Other Boleyn Girl” (book and movie) generated a huge interest in Mary as a historical figure, and everyone wanted to know more about her… And it is understandable, because Mary Boleyn is one of those historical figures who had a very interesting life, but ended up overshadowed. Because her sister was Anne Boleyn.

So I guess it isn’t very weird that they took a picture of Scarlett Johansson to illustrate the cover of the book…
