About the Costume

Sandy Powell designed this red gown for the 1998 film Shakespeare in Love, where an extra wore it. When it was reused in the first season of The Tudors in 2007 by Gabrielle Anwar as Princess Margaret, it underwent some minor changes. Trim was added around the sleeves, and additional fabric was added to give the skirt extra length. However, when the gown appeared a third time in the 2014 second season of Reign on an extra, the added fabric at the bottom was removed. Most shockingly, however – the gown was worn backward!

  1. Aaand: Bingo for: “Ce Jour Là Tout a Changé – L’Assassinat d’Henri IV” 2009. The dress is worn by a lady in waiting to Marie de Medici.

  2. Also in the cover of a CD from Hampton Court, “Henry VIII: heads and hearts”. In fact, it is a screencap from Gabrielle Anwar’s photo shoot.

  3. Oh wow, that’s a really good catch, Anna. I bet a lot of stuff from Shakespeare in Love and The Other Boleyn Girl shows up in this film. It looks beautiful!

  4. The Turkish cover for”The Queen’s Fool” also usesa picture from The Tudors photoshoot of Gabrielle Anwar as Princess Margaret it looks like it’s the same picture but flipped fromthe Henry VIII: Heads and Hearts CD from Hampton Courtthat Annette posted.

  5. This dres was also shown on th Henry VIII: Heads and Hearts CD from Hampton Court it looks like it comes from “The Tudors” photoshoot of Gabrielle Anwar as Princess Margaret. Also your Image from “Shakespeare in Love” isn’t showing.
