About the Costume

This fitted doublet is worn serveral times by Joseph Fiennes’ Lord Robert Dudley in the 1998 Elizabeth movie. The first time opened up to give way to a light blue waistcoat. The last time it is worn with matching light breeches that are still so crisp – and only shown from afar, that the underlying fabric can hardly be seen.

It is, however, possible, that the whole outer ensemble, doublet as well as breeches – that show a light blue fabric peeking through – has been reworn by an extra courtier in the French TV mini series La Dame de Monsoreau in 2008, a production that relied on more than one costume piece originating from that earlier movie production.

The costume’s design may draw inspiration from both surviving portraits of Robert Dudley, one showcasing a white doublet, the other with a similar scalloped design.
