About the Costume

This red velvet gown was first worn in the 2008 film Bathory, by Anna Friel as Elizabeth Bathory. Due to the style of the costume, it is unlikely that it originated with this film, and it almost certainly came from an earlier production.

The 2024 episode of Royal Autopsy about Mary I, or Bloody Mary, also featured this gown, sans some of the adornments seen earlier, but adding proper undersleeves. It was worn by Olivia Hallinan as Queen Mary Tudor.

Please note that both of these productions are problematic in terms of content (violence, sex, gore, etc), and commentary on the costumes in a production is not necessarily a recommendation. Please see our blog post about Disclaimers for your Dramas here.

  1. I must admit I like it better with the gold embellishments. It’s looks so bland without it and I wouldn’t remember it if I watched the documentary tbh.
