About the Costume

It is not known where this interesting green and red striped gown originated. Only the two leading ladies in 2003’s Henry VIII had original costumes, so this one was likely rented for actress Kelly Hunter’s performance as Lady Rochford, meaning it originated from another yet unknown production. The gown was seen again in the 2007 first season of The Tudors on the character of Anne Stanhope, played by Emma Hamilton. Interestingly, it was next spotted in an ad for the Chimera Lighting company in 2009. Finally, the gown made one more appearance, this time in an episode of the 2020 season of The Spanish Princess, worn by actress Sai Bennett as Mary Rose Tudor.

Costume Commentary

  1. A gown from Henry Vlll 2003 first appeared on an actress as Mary Boleyn. I can’t seem to find the actresses name, but this gown later appears on an extra as a lady in waiting in The White Queen.

    • Oops, wrong cap. That’s the one for the other page. I wish it would allow me to delete the attachment.

It seems as though the upload problems only happen on these two pages!

  2. Hi. The actress wearing the gown in The Tudors is Emma Hamilton as Anne Stanhope, though she might have been uncredited at the time and then landed the role of Anne later in the series.

  3. The gown looks familiar to me, too, but I can’t place it. Will study it more and keep my eyes peeled for it, though. (Happy New Year, Katie!)

  4. I know, isn’t it great! I laughed when I was flipping through the magazine, saw the ad, and immediately saw several reused pieces!

Thank you for pointing out QE1’s collar. I knew it was from one of the productions, but couldn’t place it – thanks! I think you are correct!

Any thoughts on where the gown the lady at center is wearing? It looks familiar, but is so covered that I can’t tell. I think it’s from The Golden Age, honestly…but I’m not sure.
