About the Costume

This orange and golden gown was first spotted on an extra in the 2005 miniseries The Virgin Queen. Because the gown appears to have metal appliques added to the bodice, and because it was worn by an extra, it’s likely that this costume originated with an earlier production. However, where that might be is still unknown.

In 2009, a photograph by Drew Gardner was used to create an ad for Chimera Lighting (the full ad can be seen in the gallery below), in which this dress appeared again. Interestingly, it is not the only reused costume that appears in the ad. The following year, the costume made its best known and most clear appearance in the 2010 season of The Tudors, when it was worn by Henry VIII’s fourth Queen, Anne of Cleves, played by Joss Stone.

In 2024, this gown underwent a transformation, with sheer gold fabric and sequins added over the sleeves, giving it a fresh look. Bomi Adeliyi wore it as Rose in the fifth episode of the first season of Amazon’s My Lady Jane.

Costume Commentary

  1. My Lady Jane really pulled an The Tudors and pulled its costumes from so many previous Tudor productions. I only really analyzed the ball scene in the fifth episode yet but that alone was a gold mine of reused and altered costumes.
I feel with time we will find even more.
