This beautiful costume, modeled after a painting of Edward VI by Scrots, was first worn by Mark Lester as Edward VI in Crossed Swords, or The Prince and the Pauper (the film can be found under both names).

The costume was used again with the jewels removed in the wonderfuly costumed, but short lived Becoming Elizabeth, where it was worn by Oliver Zetterström as Edward VI.

Costume Commentary

  1. I’ve checked this costume again for a possible additional sighting, and… Maybe I’m imagining things but I wonder if these aren’t two different costumes? The part that is bugging me is on the collar:
    When you look at the corner of the collar, the Crossed Sword one has a single curved line, the Becoming Elizabeth has two lines forming a tip at the corner. Thoughts?

    • Thanks for this! Really great catch! Do you think the costume was made for Becoming Elizabeth? It may have been, but it just doesn’t seem to fit him as well as other costumes? It could have originated somewhere else, but I don’t know where. But I guess it could plausibly be original. What do you think?

      • I have no idea. But I’m not sure where else it could come from? I’ve checked the wiki page for Edward VI on screen (here) and while there might be things missing, I don’t see where the costume could have come from. The Prince and the Pauper (1996) had good costumes, but I don’t remember a reproduction of this one (and I don’t have the files for the show with me to check sorry). Lady Jane has another reproduction of this costume with a simpler pattern for the gold thread. Then there are things like 2003’s Henry VIII who reused costumes and would not make a new one for Edward. Of course, Edward’s portrait could also have been used as a reference to make a costume for another character entirely, which would make it more difficult to track.
        I think Crossed Swords’ costume was used as late as in The Tudors’ first season (here) though it seems the color faded so I could see the need to make a new reproduction.
        I haven’t seen Becoming Elizabeth, but maybe the costume is “big” on purpose on the actor to enhance his youth and how badly adult/king responsabilities fit him? I don’t know, I have no idea where else it can come from.
