About the Costume

Elizabeth Waller created this spectacular gown for the magnificent BBC miniseries Elizabeth R. The costumes would eventually win Waller a much-deserved Emmy for best costume design.

This gown, which appears quite different depending upon the lighting, has been used in four known productions, including Elizabeth R, the documentary Elizabeth: The Acclaimed Saga of England’s Virgin Queen, the documentary The Six Wives of Henry VIII, and then in The Tudors. It was finally put up for auction at Bonhams, along with several other gowns from the production Elizabeth R. The gown is described as:

“A gold colored gown, of brocade, including bodice, skirt and kirtle/forepart, the boned bodice, heavily decorated with gold braid, pearl effect beads and rhinestones, the skirt of yellow colored cotton, edged with matching embroidered brocade, and the kirtle/ forepart of gold brocade, together with a brown and gold brocade skirt”

The costume eventually sold for £540.
