This lovely purple gown was made for Lalla Ward’s portrayal of Princess Elizabeth in the 1977 film Crossed Swords. In 2001 it was worn by an extra as a lady in waiting in the documentary The Six Wives of Henry VIII. The dress appears to have faded significantly, and all of the jewels have been removed, leaving a mark in the fabric where a brooch was originally attached.
When the gown was used again for Henry VIII in 2003 by an extra, it appears that some care was taken to cover the marks on the fabric by changing out the trim and adding additional trim down the front of the bodice.
It was worn by another extra in 2005’s The Virgin Queen before being seen in 2009 on Siobhan Hewlett as Katharine of Aragon in the documentary Henry VIII: Mind of a Tyrant. Finally, the gown was seen on two different covers of the 2011 C. W. Gortner novel The Confessions of Catherine de Medici, where it had been heavily photoshopped, with the color changed from purple to blue.

Log in to ReplyI agree. It’s sad to see how much these gowns have been put through and how you can no longer see how amaing they used to be.. Crossed Swords just had some flat out beauitifully made gowns. Everything Elizabeth and Jane wears is just incredible.

I agree. It’s sad to see how much these gowns have been put through and how you can no longer see how amaing they used to be.. Crossed Swords just had some flat out beauitifully made gowns. Everything Elizabeth and Jane wears is just incredible.
