About the Costume

This beautifully detailed gown, designed by Walter Plunkett, was created for the 1956 film Diane, where it was worn by Lana Turner as Diane de Poitiers. The film was a big project for MGM, and publicity photos show there was a great emphasis on the costumes in the film, staging its star amongst Plunkett’s creations.

In 1966, it appeared in an episode of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. called The Round Table Affair, where it was worn by Valora Noland as Grand Duchess Vicky.

The gown is owned by Nicholas Inglis of The Vintage Costume Collector. You can read his blog post about this fantastic gown at his website, which contains many more detailed photos of this incredible piece.

The gown went on display in 2015 at the Costumes from the Golden Age of Hollywood exhibit in Brisbane. Christian Esquevin of Silver Screen Modes did a great interview with Nicholas about the exhibit, which you can find here.
