About the Costume

This beautiful silk gown was made for the 1998 film Elizabeth, where Emily Mortimer wore it as Kat Ashley. It was reused for the part of Kat Ashley again, this time by Tara Rosling in the 2000 production The Royal Diaries: Elizabeth I – Red Rose of the House of Tudor.

Changes were made to the front of the bodice when the costume made its next appearance in 2005 in the HBO production Elizabeth I, where Diana Kent wore it as Lady Essex. The dress went on to be used twice in The Tudors. It was first worn in 2007 by Gabrielle Anwar as Princess Margeret, though it is barely visible beneath a red robe. In 2008 it was worn by an extra as a courtier.
