Ok, this is a big coincidence, but I may have found it in a French tv show from 1979: “Le roi qui vient du sud”, about Henry IV. A show I discovered like three days after this post! It doesn’t seem to be a co-german production but the last three episodes were directed by a German director and there are some German actors in it (I actually only found the show in German which will make it a lot harder to understand ^^’ ). Not sure when I’ll have time to make the captures and send the submission, but that’s already some info on the quest about this costume!
That said, I’ve spotted some other re-use in the show (from Elizabeth R or Crossed Swords for example), and this black dress is in a very short scene, which could mean it came from an even earlier production.

Ooooooh, so cool! I just looked at some of the photos and the costumes look neat!
I looked the series up and it is called Heinrich, der gute König in German and from what I can find it is actually a French-Swiss-German co-production. As it is from 1979, it makes it, in my humble opinion, unlikely that this dress would come from DEFA originally, as the DEFA Filmfreund website claims, since DEFA was the East German movie company. May I ask where you found the series in German? I’m still looking and I can’t find it anywhere.
Now I’m even more intrigued to solve this dress’ mystery origin.
I found it on youtube when I searched with the German title (I had found German dvds when I searched so I tried with this title and it worked). Sorry for not putting the link, it’s usually not allowed in comment.
I saw this dress (or I think it is) in the first episode, around 15:55 minutes.
I can’t wait to have time to look through this show, i’m sure there’s plenty to find in it!
Thanks for your quick reply. I just checked and judging by the details on the sleeve I would agree with you. I will check it out again on my laptop, just to be certain. Also just found out that the series is included on Amazon prime in Germany. So maybe I can get an even higher resolution screenshot from there, although the Youtube quality already looks pretty good on my phone.
I finally had time to check and at this point I’m 100% sure that you are correct and it is the same dress. It just matches too perfectly not to be the same one. I’m currently submitting an edit to the post.
Btw the episodes on youtube are in the wrong order. What is marked as episode 01 is not episode 01, the first episode is actually the one numbered 02. I only noticed it when I cross-checked it with the amazon prime order. The character wearing it is Margaret “Margo” of Valois.
Oh, I am excited! Love the digging you did for this! Thank you!
Just clicked submit. Unfortunately I can’t find any information on who the costume designer was as they aren’t credited anywhere. I wouldn’t be surprised if this isn’t the last time we will see this dress. With a thirty year gap inbetween the first and second use, I have my doubts that it just hung around in storage somewhere.
Saw it. Thank you so much!!! Absolutely 100% the same costume. And I agree I am not sure we are going to see it again, though one never does know for certain.
I really hope we can one day figure out whether the claim on the DEFA Filmfreund website is true and if so, which movie or series it originated in. I’m keeping my eyes open and I hope that others will do so too. Also I hope that Theaterkunst may eventually add it to their online catalogue if they still have it. Show it to us in all its glory.
Yeah, me too! They had such a cool site!
Just saw it again on Catherine of Aragon in an episode of Die glorreichen 10 (https://www.zdf.de/dokumentation/die-glorreichen-10/die-groessten-pechvoegel-der-geschichte-100.html). The only issue is that that show is kind of a clip show, so I still need to find the original documentary about Henry VIII, Catherine or Aragon and Anne Boleyn.
It’s from Heinrich VIII – Mörder auf dem Königsthron from 2006. I’ll submit my addition in a moment.
Oh wow, look at that! It sure is! Thank you!

The screenshot did not quite come through, sorry! If you could upload as a submission that would be great!
I have submit costume post too your site and i hope you take a look at it
I think you should already have that one as a submission from March 30th. At least I’m pretty sure by the description that it is the same dress I submitted as well.
Noted, thank you! I will take a look.
