This gown has been seen at least ten times over the years! It was first spotted in the 1972 adaptation of Cranford, where Freda Dowie wore it as Miss Brown. The following year it was worn in The Brontës of Haworth by Vickery Turner as Charlotte Brontë. In 1977 the dress appeared in Nicholas Nickleby, worn by Kate Nicholls as Kate Nickleby, and the next year it was worn in The Mill on the Floss by Judy Cornwell as Bessy Tulliver. The gown wasn’t seen again until 1983 when Zelah Clarke wore it in the title role of Jane Eyre.

The 1986 adaptation of David Copperfield used the piece for Sandra Payne’s portrayal of Mrs. Micawber, and 1994’s Middlemarch saw the dress used by Rachel Power as Mary Garth. The costume was seen again in 1999’s Oliver Twist, where Annette Crosbie wore it as Mrs. Bedwin. The gown was worn by an extra in the 2001 adaptation of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. Finally, in 2008 the dress was worn by Freema Agyeman as Tattycoram in Little Dorrit.

      • I think people who like BBC-70s stuff will enjoy it (it has all the stagey acting, bad lighting and studio bound characteristics of other programs from that era). Good cast. I also spotted another familiar dress and posted it you know where.
