About the Costume

This lovely white dress was first worn in the 1977 production of Anna Karenina by Nicola Pagett in the titular role. The costume was seen again in 1994, where it was worn by Joanne Whalley as Scarlett O’Hara in the mini-series Scarlett, though it had undergone some alterations. A new bow was added, as well as some different trimmings, but the frills at the neckline and the cut of the dress show that it is indeed the same costume. The dress underwent more alterations for ruse three years later in the 1997 film The Woodlanders, where Emily Woof wore it as Gracy Melbury.

Costume Commentary

  1. The sleeves seem the same too (sans ruffle). I wish I could have gotten a better screenshot, but it’s so difficult with streaming vid and there wasn’t a full shot of the costume. That’s all we saw of it.

  2. I think this might be the same costume, but I’m not sure. This is Emily Woof as Grace Melbury in Thomas Hardy’s The Woodlanders (1997). What do you think? (It’s from the wedding scene.)
