About the Costume

Dinah Collin designed this Victorian mourning gown for the 2017 adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s My Cousin Rachel, which Rachel Weisz wore as Rachel Ashley.

The dress was used a second time in 2017 by Jenna Coleman as Queen Victoria in the second season of the ITV series Victoria. The costume appears primarily unchanged, aside from the removal of lace around the collar and sleeves. The piece was used a third time in the 2019 first episode of the television series Dickinson, where Anna Baryshnikov wore it as Lavinia Dickinson.

  1. I think this dress might originate from an earlier movie tbh. I’m currently watching 2016’s A Quiet Passion and the dress Joanna Baker wears as Emily Dickinson’s mother at about 12 minutes and 50 seconds into the movie looks identical to me. I’ll look into it a bit more in the following days.

    • I took a closer look at it and while they are insanely similar, there are some minor differences. The side piping could have been added later but the dress in A Quiet Passion’s “stripes” point slightly upward and it was visible buttons in the front.
