About the Costume

This brightly colored waistcoat has been used at least three times over the years. It likely originated in Jane Campion’s 1993 The Piano, where Harvey Keitel wore it as George Baines. It was not spotted again until 2008 when it was seen in an adaptation of Little Dorrit, worn by Russel Tovey as John Chivery. Finally, in 2019 the piece was worn by Dev Patel as David Copperfield in The Personal History of David Copperfield.

Costume Commentary

  1. There’s a wink-and-you’ll miss it capture from the Brussels episode of the 1987 ‘Vanity Fair’. Looks like the destinct pattern of this waiscoat, which suggests that it is older than the Janet Patterson designs for ‘The Piano’. Having it so briefly worn by an extra further suggests, that it is even older, not one of Joyce Hawkins’ designs for the series.

I’ll put a capture up into a ‘edit’ appeal. Though I’m quite sure.
