About the Costume

This unique Victorian gown was first spotted in 1971’s Cousin Bette, where Margaret Tyzack wore it in the title role. The gown would surface once again in the 1997 adaptation of Jane Eyre when Lady Ingram, played by Richenda Carey, wore it. Rosemary Leach wore the dress next in the role of Mrs. Forefoot Meadows in the 1999 Tilly Trotter. Finally, the 2007 mini-series Cranford recycled the costume for Barbara Flynn’s portrayal of Mrs.Jamieson.

  1. I’m not certain, but I think I might have seen this costume on one of the guests playing cards in the opening scene of Alice in Wonderland (1999 Tina Majorino version). The film has been showing on the Encore channel recently.
