About the Costume

Uma Thurman first wore this wonderful gown as Charlotte Stant in the 2000 film The Golden Bowl. The dress was recycled in 2011 by Downton Abbey when Elizabeth McGovern wore it as Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham. At first glance, these dresses don’t appear to be the same. However, on closer inspection, the layers, the colors, and the cut match, though embroidery has been added to the sleeve and lace added around the bodice to give the piece a different look.

Costume Commentary

  1. I’ve spotted Charlotte Stant’s necklace in that picture, in “Mr. Selfridge”, on Katherine Kelly as Lady Mae…

She seems to be wearing the complete jewelry set, but Charlotte Stant only has the pendant.

  2. Yes, I agree with Gwen. I don’t think this one is the same dress. But, if I had to choose between them, I prefer Cora’s (altough Charlotte’s necklace, certainly)

    • It’s the same dress, worn with a different under-dress. (The under-dress isn’t attached.) The buttons were added after its appearance in The Golden Bowl.
