This elegant dress made its screen debut in the 1972 BBC television adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace, where Faith Brook wore it as Countess Rostova. Its second, third, and fourth appearances were by extras in the 1977 series of Poldark, the 1979 production of Prince Regent, and the 1996 production of Poldark. It was last spotted on the actress Kelly Hunter as Lady Steyne in the 2004 adaptation of Vanity Fair.

WOW! Good catch! I’ve never heard of “The Prince Regent” before. I will have to look for it. Does it go into Princess Charlotte’s story at all? I was just thinking the other day that I’ve never seen Princess Charlotte’s story played out anywhere before that I can think of…
Log in to ReplyAlso have I really not added the dress on the right yet to the site yet? That one has shown up a few places as well. I could have sworn I had, but I am not seeing it…maybe I am thinking of this one: http://www.recycledmoviecostumes.com/costume/regencyromantic119/#cst-regencyromantic119
I’m starting to have to check now as I add dresses now that we’re approaching 1000 dresses. One day soon I will accidentally add a page for a dress I’ve already added…
Log in to ReplyThe dress on the right is not the same as the one in Vanity Fair with the chains below the bodice. But they both have similar vandyking along the neckline. The one in Prince Regent is actually the same one worn by Mrs. Elton in the 1972 Emma.
The lady in the middle is wearing a familiar costume as well, although i can’t place it at the moment. EDIT: I think it was in the 70s version of War & Peace.
Log in to ReplyI’ve edited the above comment. the gown with vandyking is the very same one worn by Fiona Walker in Emma 1972. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/5e32352525c09674e840a4595fb5a041d001b5b4c6f4ba6c738bfef68ed813d2.png

Log in to ReplyI have been waiting for this mini to come out on DVD for ages! I’m really enjoying the great performances. I’ve always been fascinated about Prinny, and Egan’s portrayal is really good.
The costumes are incredible. I’ve rarely seen so many court gown costumes from these periods. Caroline of Brunswick wears some amazing outfits.
EDIT: Princess Charlotte (played by Patsy Kensit, no less) is depicted with the royal family. I haven’t completed watching the mini yet; but she is not a major character in this series.
Later Charlotte as a young woman is played by Cheri Lunghi. Her story does play out, though it is a small chapter in the overall story of the Prince Regent.
Log in to ReplyThanks, I am gonna have to get a hold of a copy. Prinny is so overlooked in history, really in terms of TV/Film portrayals. No offense to Victoria, or George III, etc, of course, because I love them too, but George IV does get the short end of he stick in films.
