About the Costume

This pretty little white regency gown with blue embroidery on the front and back was first spotted on Polly Maberly as Kitty Bennet in the 1995 Pride and Prejudice.

The next year, it danced on an extra at the Crown Inn ball in the 1996 made-for-TV version of Jane Austen’s Emma. A sheer layer of fabric appears to have been added over the embroidery, making it far less visible, though still apparent if you know what you are looking for.

In 2003, the dress was seen on Emily Hamilton as Jette in the television mini-series Hans Christian Andersen: My Life as a Fairytale.

It went on to be reused by Bella Heathcote as Jane Bennet in the 2016 Pride and Prejudice and Zombies before making its way into a 2019 episode of Sanditon, where it was worn by Rose Williams as Charlotte Heywood.

Costume Commentary

  1. Wow what a find and what a change. I honestly think I do prefer the first version but I can see the appeal of the overlay. The bow is just a bit too much for me.

  2. Ahh. Cool find, hadn’t yet tracked the faint pattern on the front panel which is actually still visible in the dress’ latest outings. Maybe it wasn’t embroidered but painted/printed and the colour washed out or faded? Although, tbh, not to the dress’ detriment… It would be somewhat – if mean-ly – in character for Kitty to have a ‘good enough’ craft project go awry and still wear it for a society outing to gather some looks and comments. Who knows? Maybe you guys just discovered a heretofore undocumented bit of Dinah Collins’ character-building-via-costuming genius ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

PS: Better view of the matching and – after all – still in place back-panel in Sanditon.
