About the Costume

This red gown has been seen at least nine times over the years, making it one of our most spotted costumes. It made two appearances in 1995 – first in Persuasion on Susan Fleetwood as Lady Russell, and then in Emma on Dido Miles as Isabella Knightley. In 1999 it was worn by Sheila Gish as Mrs. Norris in the 1999 production of Mansfield Park. At this point, lace appears to have been added to the sleeves. In 2002 it was worn by an uncredited actress as Catherine Bigg in the 2002 The Real Jane Austen, and then by an extra in the 2003 television movie Byron. In 2004, Lady Elizabeth Devonport wore it in the reality series Regency House Party. In 2007 it was seen in an adaptation of Mansfield Park on Hayley Atwell as Mary Crawford. 2008 saw the dress used twice: first by Daisy Haggard as Anne Steele in Sense and Sensibility, and then by Alex Kingston as Mrs. Bennet in Lost in Austen.

  1. Excellent, thank you! It’s been ages since i’ve seen the ITV Emma, and I don’t own it, so I had no idea who it was!

And yes – I squealed when I found it in The Real Jane Austen the other day. But I owe you a thanks for that – I didn’t even know about the documentary until you pointed it out to me! It was SO enjoyable and fascinating!

  2. The 1996 Emma in reference is the Meridian Broadcasting (TV) one that starred Kate Beckinsale. The actress is Dido Miles as Isabella Knightley.

Nice catch in The Real Jane Austen!
