About the Costume

This versatile blue/green pelisse, covered with delicate embroidery, has been utilized many times in various television and film productions, as well as a safety video for British Airways!

Rosalind Ebbutt likely created the costume for Natasha Little’s portrayal of social climber Rebecca (Becky) Sharpe in the 1998 adaptation of William Makepeace Thackary’s classic Vanity Fair. The piece was next spotted on extras in the 2002 Napoléon and the 2003 television movie Byron. The following year, it was worn by Rosie Hammond in Regency House Party before being used again by a slew of extras in the 2007 television movies Persuasion and Miss Austen Regrets, the 2009 film From Time to Time, and the 2010 miniseries The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne ListerIn 2013, it was again worn by a main character – this time by Alexandra Moen as Jane Bingley in Death Comes to Pemberley. The costume returned to background players with 2015’s Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell.

The pelisse found a home in the fourth and fifth seasons of Poldark in 2018 and 2019, as it made multiple appearances.  In the fourth season, it was seen on the same extra with long hair in episodes three, five, and seven, suggesting the scenes were filmed back-to-back, a common practice in film and television. It was spotted again in the fourth season, worn by a different actress, before being used one last time in the fifth episode of the fifth season

The most recent and random sighting of this costume is in the 2024 safety video for British Airways entitled May We Haveth One’s Attention!

  1. In the picture above, the scene from Byron, you can see part of the sleeve of the dress Julie Cox wears (as Annabella Milbanke). I’ve seen that same dress (it’s a pelisse, I think) in 3 other adaptations.
