About the Costume

Initially used for the 1995 film Pride and Prejudice, this brown dress accentuated with diagonal gold lines was worn by Anna Chancellor as Caroline Bingley. Vanity Fair recycled it for Janine Duvitski as Mrs. Bute Crawley in 1998. In 2008, it was donned first by Lindsay Duncan as Lady Catherine de Bourgh in the mini-series Lost in Austen and then by an extra in Little Dorrit. It was seen twice in 2009 – first on Christina Cole playing Mrs. Elton in the television mini-series Emma and then on Harriet Walter as Lady Gresham in From Time to Time. Finally, in 2010 it was spotted on an extra in The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister.

  1. the military hatworn by Lindsay Duncan as Lady Catherine de Bourgh in “Lost in Austen” has been worn by Sophie Hunter as Maria Osborne in Mira Nairs 2004 “Vanity Fair” and by the looks of it, it will also appear in ITV’s new version of that. Extra Jessica Roberts shared this shot of her in costume:
