About the Costume

This delightful costume was seen at least nine times from 1987 to 2011! It probably originated in the 1987 BBC adaptation of Northanger Abbey, where Helen Fraser wore it as Mrs. Morland. The dress was then seen in Duel of Hearts in 1991, worn by Suzanna Hamilton as Harriet Wantage. The ’90s saw the dress recycled a further three times. 1994’s Princess Caraboo used it for the part of Ella, played by Kate Ashfield, the 1996 Emma used it on Toni Collette as Harriet Smith, and the 1999 Mansfield Park found it worn by Sophia Myles as Susan Price. 2003 saw the dress worn by extras in both Byron and Eroica, and then in 2008 on Charity Wakefield as Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility. The last known sighting was in 2011 when it was spotted on the character Hannah, played by Mary Roscoe in the three-part BBC television adaptation of Great Expectations. The lighting in Great Expectations is so different than the other productions that the costume appears blue! However, the stripes and placement of the buttons clearly show it is the same costume.

  1. I think this is the one with gathered upper sleeves a drawstring front or at least no button up front (though, buttons on the back) and no drawstring on the prolongued lower sleeves (princess caraboo, northanger abbey, duel of hearts and emma 1996). Worn by a marcher in 2019’s “Peterloo” https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/59b6494847bb69a9ff3ed904619ed624a3edaa0abedabad6fd4579103c375251.jpg https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/4214f86de8327cd96024b94c43f6b9a43f48bd757720787fa691cb072c399084.jpg https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/876ed8da37bb3bcbff0cd5a866d28f61c6453b0e906ec91f714c264ae67d261a.jpg

  2. Both Anna and I have long believed this dress was altered, including the style of the adjustable bodice (changed from drawstring to button-front), but now I believe there are two dresses after all. This is Eve Matheson as Becky Sharp from the 1987 BBC adaptation of Vanity Fair.
