Costume Commentary

  1. Susannah Harker was hiding her pregnancy with this dress, like with many other of her costume. In that scene, when she sits to read the letter with Lizzy, the costume denotes her belly (and also she makes certain gesture, like she’s going to place her hand on it).

  2. Yes, I think you can see the back of it a couple of times in P&P. One scene is when Lizzy and Jane are told by Hill that an express came a half hour ago. You can see the back of Jane’s gown as the girls run to the back garden to find Mr. Bennet, but as she is running, you don’t get a great look at it. You can kind of see it from the front in the scene when the girls walk with Lydia while Wickham shows off on a horse (when the newlywed Wickhams visit Longbourn). I’ve noticed that it it doesn’t go very much below the hem on Harker in P&P, but when Griaznov wears it in RHP, it does. I think it also trains lower on Bond in P&P, but I’m not sure about Persuasion.
