About the Costume

This dress is a great example of both how lighting can change the look of a costume, but also of how a costume can be altered and changed between productions.

This gown was first spotted in the last episode of the 2019 first season of Sanditon, where Rose Williams wore it as Charlotte Heywood. It resurfaced on Camilla Aiko as Emily Beckett in the 2024 episode of Dr. Who titled Rogue, but not without some intriguing alterations. The box pleated trim on the skirt and the embellishments on the sleeves seem to have vanished, possibly repurposed for the added waistband.

Due to very different lighting, as well as possible post production color grading, it’s difficult to know just what color this dress is. It appears to be a light blue or gray. Indoor scenes in Sanditon have it appear gray, but outdoor scenes do make it seem as if it might be blue. Doctor Who likely used very vibrant lighting, making it appear a much brighter blue.

Despite the subtle differences, the distinctive bodice serves as a reassuring link, confirming that these two gowns are indeed one and the same.

  1. What a nice find. I can’t wait to see which other costumes from Doctor Who’s Rogue are reuses. I personally didn’t spot any but I think they only confirmed that the yellow dress worn by Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday was custom made. So there must be more. I have been looking for Indira Varma’s costume ever since the trailer dropped but haven’t been able to find it yet despite it looking insanely familiar.
