About the Costume

This spencer has been used several times over the years. It was first spotted in the 1995 Pride and Prejudice on Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet, and most likely originated there. In 2003 it was very briefly seen on Lucy Davenport as Mary Shelley in the BBC documentary Frankenstein: Birth of a Monster.

In 2008 it was seen on Jemima Rooper as Amanda Price in Lost in Austen, and in 2014 it was used on an extra in Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. Most recently it was seen in the 2019 miniseries Sanditon, where it was worn by Rose Williams as Charlotte Heywood.

  6. Since ‘Lost in Austen’ is about Amanda ‘becoming’ Lizzy, I would guess that this (and other costumes) are reused because they would have been ‘in Lizzy’s wardrobe’ considdering Amanda didn’t take her regency dresses with her.
